Freddie Gibbs Madlib

Freddie Gibbs is Back

I know it hasn’t been too long since Gibbs’ last LP “Cocaine Pinata“, released in 2014. This project was produced entirely by Madlib, my all time favorite producer . Madlib brought a fusion of psychedelic and blaxploitation inspired instrumentals. Freddie Gibbs brought rhymes reminiscent of Tupac and Scarface(who appears on this album). Bringing their skills together the album was almost flawless. With Gibbs setting such a high bar on his last project . I was more than a bit nervous to listen to his lead single for his next full length record.

Cocaine Pinata

Fortunately Gibbs not only met my expectations, he exceeded them with “Fuckin’ Up The Count” . Gibbs features a new flow on the track. Surprisingly enough it reminds me of Future. The difference being that Freddie Gibbs’ approach to the ‘Trap‘ subject matter seems more stark and tangible. Gibbs takes his normal flow and adds a higher pitched inflection on his voice. Then he adds auto tune and multi layer vocals into this song. This gives an extra layer of emotion and passion to the track. This was really fresh and I’m glad to see Gibbs is taking risks and developing his sound. Its especially good to see these risks paying off so well in his music.

Shadow of a Doubt

I had my fears about production after Gibbs parted with Madlib. Providing that this track is any indication of the production level on the project, we have nothing to worry about. Boi-1da & Frank Dukes, two producers normally associated with OVO  deliver an amazing beat. The instrumental is in a style very similar to one you might hear on Pinata. The piano (or possibly synth) lead melody is absolutely menacing, haunting, dark, and interestingly a bit muddy. The track is also able to keep a low fidelity ascetic. Meanwhile the drums give the track a balance of cleanness. This almost reminds me of something RZA would have produced in the mid 90‘s.

This track is nothing short of amazing. I will definitely be listening to this song for years to come.
