If you follow this series, you know the thing I like most in animanga is well written characters. In this respect, I feel like Gantz is king. Gantz is the story of two young high school students. They used to be childhood friends, but haven’t seen one another in years. They happen to meet up one day at a subway station. This chance encounter leads to an unfortunate accident where we see the protagonists loose their lives trying to rescue a homeless man. Instead of dying the two students were transported into a mysterious room with a large black orb. This orb directs a collection of recently deceased people to undertake missions to kill aliens(from outer space). I know this plot description sounds strange, Gantz is a very strange animanga. For anyone familiar with it, I can acknowledge that there are some serious problems with Gantz’s plot. Even so, in terms of my pure enjoyment it is one of my favorite manga series. Rei Ayanami, is a character which requires no introduction. Rei is without question, one of the most iconic and idolized anime characters of all time. You can’t go to a con without seeing Rei cosplay. Your definitely not leaving a con without seeing a side back shot of her skinny body, coupled with her expressionless face on an Evangelion poster.When you stop to examine this, its quite amazing that Rei was able to garner so much popularity. After all Rei isn’t the first emotionally damaged female mech pilot with blue hair. (Four Murasame from Zeta Gundam) Why is Rei so popular and why does she stand out? Since nothing about her appearance or story (cloning aside) really seems to really set her apart. The only thing your left with to explain her popularity, is her personality. Normally personality is the main selling point of a character , but in this peculiar case the Rei has literally no personality to speak of. She is an empty shell of a person who seems to have no personal goals or ambitions. Rei simply does what she is told. I’ve been reading what a lot of what people think of the Evangelion series .while I re-watched it for the review and one thing stood out to me. I feel like Shinji Ikari gets a bad rap as a character. Everyone from the reviewers, the diehard fans, and even the voice actor that plays Shinji seem to hate this character. They hate the character for the same specific set of reasons. I have to say that a lot of this hatred, has been a bit undue. People see Shinji’s lack of willingness to pilot the Eva as annoying and childlike. People seem to lament at each one of his bad decisions. Let us not forget that Shinji is a child, in general children make bad choices. Let’s not even really talk about the fact that Shinji is for all intents and purposes an orphan. Instead of enjoying the formative years of adolescence Shinji is forced to murder repeatedly. For everyone saying that he didn’t murder anyone. Let us not forget that the Angels have souls, and the show goes through great lengths to show that humans and angels are fundamentally the same.
