I went to a super dope jam on Saturday 19 of December 2015. The event was the 14th anniversary of Catalyst Hip-Hop. For anyone unfamiliar with Catalyst, they are an organization based out of CrossBridge Church. They have been providing a space for hip-hop culture in the south florida area. Honestly they are one of the most positive organizations I’ve ever been associated with. They provide a space for Bboys to practice and meet for free. They provide a space for hip-hop and freestyling for free.They are one of the only places outside of skate parks that I’ve seen with public graffiti walls, once again for free.They stick very close to the roots of hip-hop and it’s really appreciated. The church staff is kind, and they aren’t invasive with their message. They are very respectful and allow you to talk to them at your own pace. Hip-hop instrumentals are often stationary, but they don’t have to be. I love when I get a well executed beat switch, it makes the track more dynamic and interesting. This track is one of the best examples of a beat switch I’ve ever seen. Every few measures the beat evolves into something new.

Mixing 1 ) Engineering Mixing is the process of taking all the individual elements of a song or instrumental and forming them together into something that sounds good. Often times sound engineers try to give each instrument its own space in the mix and make sure that elements don’t overlap each other. This is more of an art than a science. Mike’s Thoughts – Synthesizer There are some terms that me and other people in music use to describe music. RJ told me I should explain these terms for everyone so I’m going to be explaining a few of them for you. A “synthesizer” or “synth” is a term for an electronic music instrument.
Bboying For The Passion I wish B-Boys got a bit more attention then they do at the moment. B-boys have taken the elements of gymnastics to an extremely high level. They often do these amazing dance moves without facilities or dedicated trainers. I know that the scene has been growing slowly, but people are missing out amazing entertainment. Old Slaves With Kanye talking about new slaves I just wanted to take a moment to remind everyone of something. We still have the old type of slaves now. They are putting together iphones and building world cup stadiums.
Mike’s Thoughts: Console Gaming For the first time in my life, I can say I would rather not have a current generation console than the money. Nothing is that captivating on console for me at the moment. Games like Fallout 4, and Metal Gear Phantom Pain got PC releases. So I’m likely just better off upgrading my PC. –
Mike’s Thoughts: Learning to DJ Learning how to DJ taught me more about hip-hop than anything. There’s something special about having a tactile response with the music. The act of manipulating a record is so physical it changes the way I interacted with music. I wasn’t just passively listening to music. I was creating something new out of a recorded track.
