Catalyst Jam 12.19.15 Event Summary

I went to a super dope jam on Saturday 19 of December 2015. The event was the 14th anniversary of Catalyst Hip-Hop. For anyone unfamiliar with Catalyst, they are an organization based out of CrossBridge Church. They have been providing a space for hip-hop culture in the south florida area. Honestly they are one of the most positive organizations I’ve ever been associated with. They provide a space for Bboys to practice and meet for free. They provide a space for hip-hop and freestyling for free. They are one of the only places outside of skate parks that I’ve seen with public graffiti walls, once again for free. They stick very close to the roots of hip-hop and it’s really appreciated. The church staff is kind, and they aren’t invasive with their message. They are very respectful and allow you to talk to them at your own pace. (If you want to learn more about the church or get involved with message they are available to help you ). I’ve never felt judged for my beliefs while at catalyst, and they don’t try to censor anything. Everything about the organization is amazing. They are just so authentic with the traditional feeling of Read More…

Cyba – She Works So Hard – great song

| | No comments yet | Tags: , , , , ,

–       This song by Cyba, personally is amazing. I like the fusion of different styles of music and eras in the song makes it surpassing. The Soul, the Funk, the Blues, the Reggae and Hip Hop all merge so well to create a conscious, touching sound. I like good music; I don’t really have a specific type. I guess… I just like for the music to have soul, if I really think about it.

Kraz, and how about I get the juice

Kraz, and how about I get the juice   Honestly I don’t know alot about Kraz, I more or less stumbled unto him on Facebook. I heard his song ” I Got The Juice” , and thought it was a good song. To be honest, if I didn’t read that Kraz was from New York, I would have sworn he was a southern rapper. I don’t have a problem with this, some people seem to excessively hate this trend. Why, well there is alot of reasons, if you are rapping for money as your drive then it makes sense to orient with what is hot. It doesn’t make sense to get mad about it but then love Jay-Z(or loved Jay-Z until the recent cool down).

Backpack Beatz – Mochilla – Album Review

Backpack Beatz – Mochilla – Album Review   Backpack Beatz released his first rap album under his current name “Mochilla”. For any of you Spanish speakers you will notice that the title is spanish for backpack. Backpack takes the word and pronounces it “Moe – Chill – A”. This goes a long way towards describing the somber feeling of the album. Backpack Beatz is a Producer/ Rapper/DJ from Pensacola, Florida. The first time I met Backpack was in 2011. At that time he was rapping under the name “Livin Proof” and producing under Backpack Beatz. I heard his first released at that time, a project called “Ramen and Fruit Punch“. Backpack produced this entire album himself. You can easily compare him to other producer/rappers such as Kanye West, Big K.R.I.T. , and J. Cole.

Top 6 Robson Pires song until Album Release, Song 1

Robson-journey to the center and keep you forever — Impression of all of Robson’s Tracks   I am going to write my ultimate impression from listening to Robson’s Tracks. I have listened to his singles and I have told my feelings about them each time. That doesn’t mean because I like something as a single or in singles that I share similar feelings about it as a whole. In fact many times people are surprised about my conclusions. They would assume that because I like something, I like everything about it and it has no flaws. That is very rare for me, as usually I am told “you rate too hard”. Now, maybe because I’ve only been sleeping an average of 3 hours a day(lucky week), It’s possible that my judgement might be slightly impaired. I really don’t believe that to be the case when it comes to good music, below is my original impressions.   I actually like this performance alot. It doesn’t fully capture, how good Robson is in person. I will be getting this album, because I really like the music. I really like that the lyrics to his songs actually makes sense. A lot songs have Read More…

Piss on Your Grave Feels Like Kanye Pissing on his Legacy

Travis Scott – Piss On Your Grave (feat. Kanye West) (Official Video) – Travis Scott released a new video for his third single off of his debut album Rodeo. The single entitled “Piss on Your Grave” features Kanye West . Kanye has been going down a bad path for a long time now. I have a lot to say here, so I am going to break down this article in into three sections. I’m going to go into detail about the quality of the song and the music video. After that I’ll look at the big picture for Kanye West in terms of his music legacy. —

Album Review – Raury – All We Need

| | No comments yet | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I’m not going to lie, nothing on this tape really grabbed me. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not saying that the music was terrible. Raury had an interesting sound, but nothing about his lyrics or performance made me want to listen to the record again after the first few listens. But I did come away with the thought that Raury had a lot of potential. So coming into this project my hopes were that Raury would have refined his sound a bit more, as well as improve his lyricism.

Freddie Gibbs – Fuckin’ Up The Count – Track Review

| | No comments yet | Tags: , , , , , , ,

Freddie Gibbs …is Back I know it hasn’t been too long since Gibbs’ last LP “Cocaine Pinata“, released in 2014. This project was produced entirely by Madlib, my all time favorite producer . Madlib brought a fusion of psychedelic and blaxploitation inspired instrumentals. Freddie Gibbs brought rhymes reminiscent of Tupac and Scarface(who appears on this album). Bringing their skills together the album was almost flawless. With Gibbs setting such a high bar on his last project . I was more than a bit nervous to listen to his lead single for his next full length record.

Capital 6 – Summer Jelly Vol 2 – Album Review

Cap 6, Cap 6 !!! We back in here, and I’m glad to say that I have a new full length from Capital 6 to review, Summer Jelly Vol 2. Capital 6 is a dope collective of lyricists coming out of Tallahasse. Crew member Intricate explains perfectly how to describe the sound of Capital 6 in his track “Heads Up”. Here he delivers the lines “My crew lane is like the Pharcyde meets Wu-Tang”. You have Crimson who delivers so many bars in each line sometimes, I wonder how he is even breathing. Even more amazing, Crimson has the uncanny ability to stay perfectly in pocket . You have an Intricate, intense aggressive lyricist who has some of the most quotable bars and rhyme schemes out of any one in the crew. You have Donny Bransco, who without a doubt has the hypest choruses of anyone in the crew. Don’t let that hype box him in, Donny is no stranger to singing on his tracks as well. You have Rob Ohtis who sings the most in the crew. He has one of the dopest outlooks on love and life I’ve ever heard on wax. Finally you have Hakeem Furious ,who is like Read More…

Mac Miller – GO:OD AM – Album Review

| | No comments yet | Tags: , , , , , ,

Today we will look at  Mac Miller’s project GO:OD AM. The tile which can read either  good AM or go O.D. AM. This is a very fitting title for project. As the project is filled with down tempo, and dreamy reverb soaked sounds. The whole project feels like your either falling asleep or just waking up stuck in the twilight. Either that or you get the feeling that your wide awake and your world is slowing down due to the drugs you’ve just taken, which is something that Mac Miller isn’t shy to reference.

Run The Jewels – Meow The Jewels- Album Review

So wow, this is a thing that is happening. What started as a joke kickstarter campaign quickly turned serious. Raising more than $ 60,000 the internet was able to in effect force a remix album of Run The Jewels’ hardcore hip-hop album using cat sounds.I was of coarse shocked , when I first read this. Do cats even makes sounds ? I had to ask myself because in my personal experience it’s hard as hell to get a cat to make noise. This surely can’t be a thing that is happening. So I let a few months pass and lo and behold Meow the Jewels is released and features quite an impressive list of producers. You have El-P (of coarse), Just Blaze, Prince Paul, The Alchemist, and Dan the Automator just to name a few. So when I saw the list of producers this immediately peaked my interest even more than the initial announcement. These are all serious top level producers who always step up with amazing instrumentals. So it was weird to see them featured on a “joke” remix album. So I’m going to have to clear up what might be a misconception. Meow the Jewels is a serious Read More…

Character Talk: A Defense of Shinji

| | No comments yet | Tags: , , , , , ,

I’ve been reading what a lot of what people think of the Evangelion series .while I re-watched it for the review and one thing stood out to me. I feel like Shinji Ikari gets a bad rap as a character. Everyone from the reviewers, the diehard fans, and even the voice actor that plays Shinji seem to hate this character. They hate the character for the same specific set of reasons. I have to say that a lot of this hatred, has been a bit undue. People see Shinji’s lack of willingness to pilot the Eva as annoying and childlike. People seem to lament at each one of his bad decisions. Let us not forget that Shinji is a child, in general children make bad choices. Let’s not even really talk about the fact that Shinji is for all intents and purposes an orphan. Instead of enjoying the formative years of adolescence Shinji is forced to murder repeatedly. For everyone saying that he didn’t murder anyone. Let us not forget that the Angels have souls, and the show goes through great lengths to show that humans and angels are fundamentally the same. This kid has quite a few deaths Read More…

Crimson x Ethnikids – We Put Out Some Songs – EP Review ?

| | No comments yet | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

I’m going to review what is essentially a new EP from Crimson  and EthniKids. Crimson who hails from the Bronx and Tallahassee’s own Julian Cruz have teamed up to deliver one of the most interesting groupings of music I’ve heard this year. Crimson, outspoken member of Capital 6 is known as an incredible lyricist. He just has a way of putting a lot of really big words into really tight rhyme schemes that flow off effortlessly. J. Cruz was introduced to me by outlawed beats. J. Cruz and the EthniKids(his production team) stood out immediately for me with high quality production and electronic influences. Based on both artists previous material, you wouldn’t really see these two coming together. They are both excellent artist but they seemed to occupy different niches of music. That would be my sentiment except for the fact that the last track I heard from Crimson with an heavy electronic influence was Throw it Down. This track remains to this day my favorite Crimson songs, so I had high hopes going into this project. . Low and behold after hearing a few rumblings about a release being in the work. We finally saw some of these tracks Read More…

Buster Wolf – Vejigante – Album Review

| | No comments yet | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , ,

I first met Buster Wolf in early 2015. He was ripping a show at Liberty Bar(one of the best venues in Tallahassee). What stood out to me immediately about Buster Wolf was his alternative style, his incredible breath control, his high energy, and his gamer influence. From talking to him I gathered that we had a lot of the same musical background. Like me Buster had a firm familiarity with the classic hip-hop albums like the Black Star, Like Water for Chocolate, and Low End Theory. Not only that, he was also familiar with  alternatives acts like Cannibal Ox and Doom. So when he told me that he didn’t have a proper full length it was a bit disappointing, but  he let me know he was in the process of making a project call Vejigante I was really looking forward to it. Being a man in a mask, we shared a dope conversation about masks. Apparently the Vejigante is a piece of Puerto Rican folklore represented by these brightly colored masks. So after seeing Buster Wolf open up for KRS-One I was given a “physical” copy of his album Vejigante . The album is on a really cool looking card USB Read More…

Music Talks: Markus TankBo Woods (Introduction Music Artist Review)

| | No comments yet | Tags: , , ,

Just had the pleasure of connecting with and listening to a new track put out by Markus TankBo Woods. I must say I personally believe he is an amazing artist. I when I listened to his music, I was actually shocked. It was more than pleasantly even better than I thought. I mean I knew he was good because he had good company, Black Tarzan and Absolute Zero. Still this track and the others I listened to were bar raisers for other guys making music, honestly. ———————————————————————————

Y: The Last Man Comic Review

| | 2 comments | Tags: , , , , , , ,

Y: The Last Man is a comic by Vertigo that was released September 2002 – March 2008. I recently picked it up and finished it based on a recommendation from my good friend Dom, he does great animations, curating, and interviews on his youtube channel. But back to the task at hand the Last man, as its name implies is a story about the last man alive on planet earth after some mysterious event called “The Plague” kills off every male mammal on the planet. The only surviving man on the planet is Yorick Brown, a relatively wimpy beta male who’s only skills are that of an escape artist (think David Blaine) and a wide knowledge of pop culture. He accompanied by a mysterious government agent named 355 and a scientist named Allison Mann as they travel a post apocalyptic world filled only with women. Presentation 10/10 The Artwork was excellent; the scenes are illustrated beautifully and the style stays very consistent throughout the work. That being said, I feel the coloring is really where I feel this comic shines. The colors tend to have this autumn feel to them and the lighting always seems to have this feeling of Read More…
